And on a more personal note....

I was cleaning and organizing paperwork in my classroom last week and I came across something I wrote back in April when I attended a workshop for my teaching job. The workshop was about strategies for how to teach writing.   We actually tried out a lot of the strategies in the workshop.  One of things I ended up writing really touched me and I still tear up when I read it.  I really don't remember what the prompt was but we just had to free write on the prompt for a set amount of time.  Here is what I wrote.

"I just lost my Nana. Well really it's almost been a year. She died on Mother's day 2012.  How has it almost been a year already? The house she lived in with my Granddad just sold this month.  I spent 36 years loving to visit that house.  I  hope I always remember the sound of the front door as it slammed shut. The sound of my Nana puttering around in the kitchen late at night or working at her desk while watching TV.  The sound of my Granddad whistling to the birds outside while he worked on his flower beds.  The sound of the train in the middle of the night.  The smell of rain on the prairie through the open windows during the summer.  I miss my Nana and Granddad and I will somehow miss the house on East Beaver almost as much.  I really didn't realize how much until I spent my last day in it last August."

When my Nana passed last year I didn't write about it on here.  It was just too abstract and painful for me to deal with.  I'm still not sure I've really realized that she's gone.  She lived in Hawaii most of the year so I didn't see her very often, so sometimes it still feels like she's here but just on vacation (which she loved to be on).  But she is gone and there is a big hole.... and when I stop and think about it, I realize how much I miss her.  She was hilarious, fun, accepting and loving.

Day 25 of 30 Day Gratitude Photo Challenge

Day 25: Beauty
This is a shot from the deck of the beach house in North Myrtle Beach we stayed in over Thanksgiving.  It really was beautiful.  It was so nice being right on the water.  It was such a good time being in the house with my mom & stepdad and my brother and his family.  I really do have a great family and I am so very thankful and grateful to have them in my life.

Day 15 of 30 Day Gratitude Photo Challenge

Day 15: Family

This is my mom and step dad and I am so thankful for them.  They moved here from Colorado a few years ago and it's been so nice to have them so close.  It's also so nice for my kids too.  They do so much for us and I'm so grateful for all they do.

Ten on Tuesday

1. What is your favorite childhood memory?
There are so many! But some of my fondest are the family reunion/vacations I went on every summer with my mom's side of the family.  More often than not we went to Estes Park, Colorado (we are from Colorado).  I just loved being with my grandparents, aunts & uncles, & my cousins.  We still get together and I look forward to it all year. This is a picture from the one two years ago in Denver.

2. What is your favorite quality about yourself?
I'm a hard worker and I will do anything I can for my family & friends.

3. What is your favorite thing that your child does?
I love that my son Noa can totally change the subject when he wants to get out of something.  And man he does it well!! Sometimes he does it and 20 mins. later I realize hey he's supposed to be cleaning his room but he got me off subject and we are looking up a fact on the Internet.

I love that Marley sings and hums all the time.  She sings with me and to me and it's soooooo cute! One of our favorite books is Snuggle Puppy by Sandra Boynton and there are parts that I sing to her and she now sings with me when I read it to her.

4. What is your favorite thing to do to relax?
If I'm at home,  I like to just hang with James and watch a good movie or TV show.  I also fold my origami flowers which helps me to focus and quite my brain (which is hard sometimes).
If I have been overwhelmed with kids and everyday stress getting out with my girlfriends is great.

5. What is your favorite restaurant? And what is your favorite thing on the menu?
Are you kidding one favorite restaurant?  One of my favorite nicer restaurants is PF Changs.  I love their chicken lettuce wraps and shrimp fried rice.  My two favorite casual local places are Flaming Amy's Burrito Barn and Chris' Cosmic Kitchen.  I love, love. LOVE Flaming Amy's fresh salsa!!  I crave it.  And Chris' has the best omelets! I personally love their Lump Crab Omelet. OK now I'm hungry....

6. What is your favorite piece of jewelry (besides your wedding ring)?
Besides my wedding and engagement rings I wear two other pieces jewelry all the time.  One is a ring my mom gave me for my 18th birthday (I think) and it's a silver ring with gold accents. It's very different looking but so me!  The other piece is a silver necklace I got a few years ago.  It's got two small silver circles that have Noa stamped on one and Marley stamped on the other and small pearl that hangs next to them.

7. What is your favorite night of the week M-TH? And why?
Either Monday or Wednesday right now.  James usually works 2 nights a week most semesters and this semester it happens to be Tuesday and Thursday.  So I like Monday and Wednesday because he is home and we hang out for one and then usually I go to the movies with my friend Ivy for the other night.

8. What is your favorite dessert?
I have a sweet tooth so I am not that picky I love all things sweet (except white chocolate).  But if I had my choice it would be cherry cobbler or my friend Jennifer's coconut cupcakes.

9. What is your favorite item in your make-up bag?
Mary Kay waterproof mascara in black/brown.  Good for everyday wear!!

10. What is your favorite smell?
Vanilla, babies, garden roses.

In Memorium

On Friday we had to make a very hard decision. We had to have our 16 year old cat Circe put to sleep. She had been having major problems and well we didn't want to see her suffer so we made the hard call.

Circe in our condo circa 1999

I got her back in '97 when she was 3. She was living with some guy who worked for my mom and he was moving and couldn't take her with him. So my mom and my ex-stepfather (who was a sucker for cats) took her in even though they already had 3. I happened to come home from college for the weekend right after they got her. She was used to being an only cat and strictly indoor cat and she was being forced to be an outdoor/indoor cat with 3 other cats. Well she hated it. All of it. The being outside thing and the other cats too. She took a shining to me and stayed in my room with me all weekend. I had just recently moved to a one bedroom apartment by myself and was thinking it would be nice to have pet. So I decided I would take her home with me. I don't even think I asked my mom and ex-stepfather, I think I just told them I was taking her. And so she became part of my family. My husband came along not long after Circe. She moved with us to another apartment, our condo and then finally here to our current house. She even dealt with us getting a puppy and then another kitten.

Circe making it clear that she was really our first not our newborn son

On top of that she went through the toddler phase (well she almost made through ... my daughter is still 2 and still kind of in the toddler stage) with both of my children. She was a very sweet and loving cat but she always made her self and her needs known, sometimes rather loudly I might add. But she was the start of my family and I miss her dearly. Her place on the couch is hard to look at without her there. But she is in a better place. So here's to one of the best cats there ever was .... Circe.
